Expressing opinions and preferences

Conversation

Anna: Hi, Jake. Have you seen the new movie at the theater?

Jake: Yes, I watched it last night. I think it was really exciting!

Anna: Oh, really? In my opinion, the trailer didn’t look very interesting.

Jake: Well, everyone has different tastes. Personally, I love action movies.

Anna: I prefer comedies. I’d rather watch something funny than an action film.

Jake: That makes sense. What do you think about watching a comedy together this weekend?

Anna: That sounds great! I’d love to.

How to express opinions

When talking about opinions, use these common phrases:

  • I think… (I think this restaurant is great.)

  • Personally,… (Personally, I prefer summer over winter.)

  • From my point of view,… (From my point of view, he is very talented.)

How to express preferences

When talking about what you prefer, use these phrases:

  • I prefer… (I prefer tea to coffee.)

  • I like… better than… (I like morning walks better than evening walks.)

  • I’d rather… than… (I’d rather stay home than go out.)

  • I’d prefer to… (I’d prefer to read a book.)

Asking for opinions and preferences

You can also ask others what they think or prefer:

  • What do you think about…? (What do you think about this song?)

  • How do you feel about…? (How do you feel about trying a new restaurant?)

  • Do you prefer… or…? (Do you prefer tea or coffee?)

  • Would you rather… or…? (Would you rather go to the beach or the mountains?)

Practice

Try using these phrases in your own conversations:

  1. Talk with a friend about a movie or a book you recently watched or read.

  2. Discuss your favorite type of music and ask for your friend’s opinion.

  3. Ask someone what they prefer: traveling by car or by plane, and why.

The more you practice, the more confident you will be in expressing your thoughts and preferences!
