Present Simple Tense

1. Dialogue

Emma: Hi, Jake! What do you do every morning?

Jake: Hi, Emma! I wake up at 7 a.m. I brush my teeth and eat breakfast. Then I go to school. What about you?

Emma: I get up at 6:30. I drink tea and read a book. Then I walk to work.

Jake: That sounds nice!

Emma: Yes! And on Sundays, I visit my grandparents.

Jake: I play football on Sundays!

2. What is the Present Simple?

The Present Simple tense is used to talk about:

  • Habits and routines (things we do regularly)

  • Facts and general truths

  • Schedules and time s

  • Permanent situations (things that do not change)

  • Instructions and directions (giving orders or advice)

  • Feelings, thoughts, and opinions (things we believe or think)

3. How to Use the Present Simple

A. Affirmative Sentences

Subject Verb (+s/es for he/she/it) Example
I / You / We / They base verb I wake up early.
He / She / It verb + s/es He wakes up early.

Spelling rules for -s/-es:

  • Add -s to most verbs: eat → eats

  • Add -es to verbs ending in -sh, -ch, -ss, -x, -o: go → goes, watch → watches

  • Change -y to -ies if the verb ends in consonant + y: study → studies

B. Negative Sentences

4. Time Expressions Used with Present Simple

  • Every day/week/month/year → I go to school every day.

  • On Mondays/Tuesdays… → She works on Mondays.

  • Always, usually, often, sometimes, never → He always eats breakfast.
