Using "The" and "A/An" Correctly
1. Dialogue: At a Café
Lisa and Tom are at a café, ordering drinks.
Lisa: I’d like a coffee, please.

2. Comparing "A/An" and "The"
"A" or "An" is used when talking about something for the first time or when it is not specific.
Example: I saw a cat in the garden. (We don’t know which cat.)
Example: She bought an apple. (Any apple, not a specific one.)
"The" is used when talking about something specific or known to both the speaker and the listener.
Example: I saw a cat in the garden. The cat was black. (Now, we know which cat.)
Example: Can you pass me the salt? (Both people know which salt.)
3. When to Use "The"
When both the speaker and the listener know what is being talked about
Example: Close the door, please. (There is only one door in the room.)
When there is only one of something
Example: The sun is shining.
Example: She traveled around the world.
When talking about something mentioned before
Example: He bought a car. The car is red.
With superlatives and ordinal numbers
Example: She is the best teacher.
Example: This is the first time I’ve been here.
With names of rivers, seas, and some countries
